so here is the deal i have a bad squeak coming from something in the drive line of my jeep and i cant figure it out. it doesnt do it in 4wd it only does it after 20mph its a constant squeak it doesnt get faster, slower, or louder i already replaced my front u joint 2 times and i have a aussie locker up front. any ideas to solve this would be great
It sounds like the hamster is getting lippy. Time to get him back in line.

How is the rear joint of the front DS?
Is there any play on the front pinion shaft?
I'd remove the front DS and see if the noise goes away, first.

Was it squeaking before you changed the front pinion seal?

do you think problem this might be coming from my front steering u joints?

Take the front driveshaft out first and see if the squeak remains.
If it does, then we start looking at the front axle shaft u-joints.

NEVER MIND next up wheel bearings
well just priced wheel bearing (hub assembly) because the hubs are sealed
and they are 89$ for the crappy ones and 159$ for the good heavy duty ones

You said in your first post that it was a constant squeak after about 20 mph, and NOT in four wheel drive. To me that would eliminate the frront driveshaft. It would also eliminate the axle sahft u-joints as they would not be turning when you're not in four wheel drive. Its really difficult to determine what it would be. I will PM you my number and then I listen to it and help you find your squeak.

I thought a can of WD-40 was mandatory equipment on Jeeps... one squirt and the squeak is gone!

If the squeak is constant and doesn't vary with speed I would count out all rotating parts such as the bearings. The squeak would change until you hit the point of no squeak. I would jack up the rig have someone help you and spin tires, work the steering, spin the ds, and listen.

Hey,
Jeeps spin the front driveshaft all the time, as they don't have a disconnect of sorts in the front axle or disconnecting hubs. So they are always spinning and could be it still.

Have you removed the front driveshaft yet and tried it?

i haven't removed the drive shaft yet i will probably do that tomorrow or late today. most likely i will buy the hubs today and change those out too since pretty much everything on my jeep has been on it since 1998. so far all the u joints i have replaced have been pretty much gummed up or metal on metal contact and worn down so i am doing a lot of good by just replacing everything anyway. plus it cant hurt to have newer and strong parts on the rig

going to the skill center today at 11:30 to do both hubs and the other u joint on my front drive shaft (the one that goes to transfer case) we will see what happens lol

so i give up on this. i dont know what it is or why its still making noise so if anyone else wants to drive it or look at it and can figure it out fell free (not asking you to fix it just take a look)

did you pull the front shaft? If not, pull it out for a bit and drive around in rear wheel drive. If that does not work try the same thing with the rear shaft. Process of elimination before you go buying stuff you dont need.

i would but i am not able to get to the bolts on the back to take it off i might need to go to the skill center again and if this works do you think it would be that double joint or ????

That double joint is not expensive. When I replaced my front shaft u-joints (all three) I paid maybe $35 for the joint at Young's Gear.

I kinda figured that it was probably that joint after all the other work you've done.
It's not that hard, knock it out and you'll be golden.
Not to mention, you are learning, and rebuilding your Jeep as you go.

well it needs to be done and everything is old and most likely from the factory in 98 so might as well replace it all anyway be for it breaks right??

all the old stuff you might want to keep as a emergency fix on the trail.
AKMark

Yup,
With a Jeep, if you wheel it, (the way I wheeled them anyway) you gotta plan on having to rebuild the whole thing a piece at a time.
The old parts make decent trail spares, although with this joint I don't think it would be very easy or possible to change one on the trail without a decent press.

i just cant wait for the squeaking to stop im tired of turning up the radio, or engaging the 4wd to get it to stop

so i did this project on SAT. and finished sometime around 2pm and so far it has been 3 day and i haven't had any squeaking so i think i finally fixed the problem (about time)
