After weeks of working on the XJ a little at a time it's still not done. I haven't had time to do much so only working on it in small incriments sucks. So today I buttone it up, at least I though. Ran it for a bit then checked for leaks and sure enough there was one. It was leaking from the rear cooler line. So I turned the fitting with a wrench and realized it wasn't in right. so off it came along with tons of trans fluid. Got the plastic tabs loose and the fitting off the line. The threads seemed a little messed up but not bad. Took a look at the port on the trans and the threads are messed up right at the beginning of it. I put the fitting in the old trans and it went in fine but it will not go in the new one. Now what? This is the only thing holding me back for a bit. I don't know the thread size or type to see if I could run a thread chaser in it or a tap in it. But then how do I keep the metal shaving from going in if I can do that? Any ideas? If I have to pull the trans the XJ will be down for a long time as I don't have time to work on it much more.

if you run a tap into it, fill the hole with cloth then tape a telescoping magnet end into one of the flutes of the tap, drawing the metal shavings to the magnet

It all went to editediteditedit again. I thought the other fitting was going in right but after taking a second look it isn't. The threads on the trans are messed up and the fitting isn't biting them. Now I'm out of time for working on this. I'll have to get a tap for the size and thread type to tap it. Problem is I'll have to drop the trans quite a bit to get to it. Since I'm not going anywhere this weekend now I may have time to work on it but if I don't it will be a week or more before I can. Oh well. Time to find another rig and quit fooling with darn jeeps.
