A buddy who's putting together an XJ and who wants to be a recruit once his Cherokee is running is in need of a special tool for a 8.25 axle, he says the tool is a special 33mm socket that basically sets the carrier bearing pre-load. I might not be using the right terms here (I never worked ona 8.25 axles), but if anyone has experience with it you might know the tool. If anyone here has it he would like to borrow it.

I thought the 8.25 axle had adjustable backlash collar that you use a punch and hammer to set backlash, very much like the Ford 9" and the CH 9.25

Yes Nate but how would you get a punch and hammer all the way down the axle tube? :) You need the special tool. Or a control arm from an early 70's chevelle. Ren give e a call tomorrow. I think I still have one, if I don't I know who I gave it to and can get it from him. Oh and it's not a socket it's more like a bolt head.

Weird he just called me. He doesn't have it anymore. Chris had one that was homemade and gave it to someone as payment for gear work. They are really easy to make, mine was home made. Denali carries the right size nut, get some pipe and weld it on.

I talked to him and he is going to try and get a nut and weld it like you said. I told him I'd try to get the tool in case he fails.
