Patient: 2006 GMC Sierra crew cab, 5.3L 4wd, 6 lug hubs.

Symptom: ABS and brake light illuminate while under normal driving conditions. Rubbing and squeeek emitting from hub/brake area behind passenger side front tire.

Layman's prognosis:
1. brake pads worn out
2. hub bearings worn
3. loose or broken lug nuts allowing wheel to wobble.

Steps to diagnosis:
Removed front passenger tire. Inspected brake pads and rotor. No visual defects noted. Inspected outer portion of caliper, lug holes on rim assembly, and wheel lug studs. No indication of loose or wobbly tire mount. Rotated wheel hub assembly by hand. Rotation felt gravelly and uneven. Makes the tell-tale rubbing/squeeking sounds when rotated by hand.

Prognosis:
Passenger side wheel hub bearings worn out. Replace unitized bearing assembly.

Finding the cure:
Price at RockAuto.com. $134 plus shipping.

1 tiny torx head screw retains the rotor to the hub assembly. None of the replacements available has the threaded hole to reuse the screw. The rotor just floats on the hub assembly and is held into place with the calipers and brakes.

Luckily I didn't go Captain Caveman on the retainer clips because GM has designed new ones that very easily open up with a twist of a flathead screwdriver. The ABS wiring harness is bolted directly to the hub assembly, so when you swap out hubs, you need to route the new harness through the retaining clips and connect it to the female connector mounted to the top of the framerail right behind the upper portion of the shock.
