The controller for my winch intermittently fails while powering in. Power out is fine, but power in works about 20 percent of the time. ANyone have any insight?
I think I am to the point of cracking open the controller and making my winch have inboard controls.

Take meter, do a continuity check.
Probably have a short somewhere.

The problem may lie in your solenoid pack as well. If a quick continuity test doesn't show a bad switch, the best test would be at the solenoids, using voltage, when attempting winch operation.

straight from Warn.
Nate,
You have two options to repair your winch. You can send it into an Authorized Warn Service Center for repair or you can take the winch apart and order service parts directly from Warn at www.warn.com
or from an Authorized Service Center to repair the winch yourself. You can find a complete list of Warn authorized service centers listed on our website at www.warn.com/corporate/authservicecenters.shtml.
Please note that all warranty evaluation/repairs require proof of purchase and repairs must be done by an Authorized Service Center .
Your winch has a one year electrical warranty and a limited lifetime warranty on mechanical components. You may have a bad remote or a couple bad power in solenoids. When your winch won’t power in, do you hear any clicking?
Your winch operates with 4 solenoids. Two that power in and two that power out. Your upper left and lower right are your power in solenoids and your upper right and lower left are your two power out solenoids. I would recommend using a multi-meter to test your two power in solenoids for 12v. Also, if you have a buddy with a Warn winch, it would be helpful if you could use his remote to see if that alleviates the power in issue as I’m not really sure if it’s the remote or the solenoids at this point.

You can use my hand controller if needed
mine did the same thing, I had a bad pin on mine. Everythign looked good until I plugged it in, then it would release and push back into the plug.
