So im relatively new to alaska, just bought an 85 chevy c30, its a heavy monster that im thinkin bout cuttin up and bobtailin. Got a 454 with lots of raw power just nowhere really to go ridin. Used it in the mud several times, needs better tires and a lift but its a work in progress. Would like to get into some rock climbing maybe once i get it done. Im up for anything and like meeting new people so hit me up.

Hollis, is that you?
If so, nice to see you, SSG P from the Old Dukes here, the two winches on your truck should come in handy someday.
If not, nice to meet you anyway. We'll get together and put that big rig of yours in the trail.

So here's where im sittin right now for anyone thats got some tips or parts. Im currently waitin on a paycheck to fix my front axle seal on the yoke. quick fix no big deal. Im also tryin to find a cheap way to lift the front six inches and find some 38's to stick under it. Back end is no problem. Im just tryin to get some more ground clearance on this thing and then put my snorkel and finish out my stacks in the bed. Thinkin about welding the axles cuz lockers are expensive as hell but im open to advice. Im also fixing to start building a tube frame for a project i got in my head. Just a straight up mudder with no cab or anything special. Im wondering when i lift this beast six inches will i need new brake lines cuz they're pretty short. And im lookin for a trustworthy drop pitman arm as well.

For axle parts check out Young's Gear here in Fairbanks(www.youngsgear.net (http://www.youngsgear.net)), they have all the parts you need. I also have a pinion leak on my rear axle and I'm looking forward to fixing it soon. You could look at an auto locker, either a Lock Right or an Aussie Locker, they go inside your carrier and cost less than $200 each. I have one for my front axle but haven't installed it yet.

Take the Steese highway North from Airport way. Cross over the Chena river and make the next left at the stoplight (3rd st). Go about 100yards and make a left onto 40 mile avenue. Continue to the end, where it terminates at a boat launch and park.

I'mnot sure if Young's has them in stock, but I know they can get the Lock Rights. You can check the price for the Aussie Lockers here: www.aussielocker.com (http://www.aussielocker.com), I would give Ron (The_Ronster) a PM and see if he can get you lockers at a good price.

While welding the diffs is cheap on the front side, you will pay for it in tires many times over down the road. I ran a lunch box front loicker and it has held up nicely to 28.5's and 4.88's. Have taken plenty of abus ena ddoesn't wear out tires like ewelding can and will.
Cheap way to get 6" front here in frbks - fdare I say - go check out cherokee Performance shop - buy only what he has in stock - but he stocks front springs. You'll also need a steering correction arm and shocks. Really there isn't much easier or better way to put 6" lift on the fronts. I think at his shop the springs normally go for about 185 per pack.

Alright ill check that out, i got a guy sellin me the 52" rear springs for 50 apiece and i was told i could put em up front just move the hangers and it would give it 6 to 8 inches. I know i need the shocks and the arm but im not too worried bout that just yet i know i can get those pretty cheap. Im tryin to replace the pinion seal on the front axle right now and dont have the right size tools to get the darn yoke off anyone wanna help out id appreciate it. I've got the seal and the fluid just need to get the thing off. Cell is 907 799 3672 if anyone has a good sized socket set i could come use. Other than that im free for today and pretty much everyday like i said, anyone need an extra hand ill be glad to help.

ok so i really did it now, i put the new pinion seal in and filled it up with fluids, checked all my levels and tried my best to stop an annoying lifter from tapping. Bout halfway up birch hill i realize ive lost a lot of power and my exhaust sounds funny as hell so i know i got the lifters wrong and will need some help fixin that one. Well i decide its not that big a deal as long as its not knockin they're not contactin the pistons and wont get bent so i pushed on. I decided to test out the 4wd and the new clutch so i tried a lil rock climbing. Got stuck in a jamb just wide enough for my truck with a washout on the side so i tried to turn into it and get my drivers side up on the embankment to clear the washout. after a couple tries i backed down and tried it again, got it this time but when i got to the top i noticed i couldnt make a right turn, only left, and it was hard to turn. Got out and checked and my steering gearbox sheared two of the four bolts holding it to the frame and broke the frame as it twisted away from the pressure. straightened it out and put a new bolt in, now i gotta weld the frame and find two more bolts to fit it. And where the steering arm connects to the gearbox is bent all to hell and the rubbers torn and its just a mess so im gonna be doin quite a bit of wrenchin this weekend. Anyone knows anything about lifters i would love the help cuz i dont know editediteditedit about how tight to get the rockers. Truck is runnin like editediteditedit though so i need to get it done soon. Thats it for me im out for the night lemme know if anythings goin on this weekend.

Sawyour truck on the side of the road by the fire department today... get today, I can help you tow it back to the barracks, it's not too far.
Are your lifters hydraulic or mechanic?

gotta get my steering fixed still, the bolts i found were too small. Thinkin bout welding it in place with some small easy to grind welds in case i need to replace the gearbox. Shouldnt be anytime soon but who knows with the luck ive been having lately. And i still need to get my lifters done i have no clue how to do it i tried my hand at it again and its still not workin out for me. Gotta get me a new valve cover gasket too im leakin oil all over the dang place. Everything will just have to wait til next paycheck unfortunately. Oh and Ren you mind if i ride with you to the lunch tuesday?

I'm not sure how to work on your vale lifters either, but I know AKO has all the Chilton maintenance books online. I'm sure you can find it there. Go to AKO, then "My Library" under self service, then click on the Automotive section, you can find it from there. If you need help please get with me tomorrow at work, I'll show you were to get the info. After work on wednesday I am headed to the auro craft shop to repair my leaking pinion seal, if you're there I can give you a hand with the lifters.

what do you need to do to them?
AKMark

Definitely brace the frame, but don't weld the steering box to it. Use good bolts.
Bad things happen when you only weld something "good enough" for what you think it will need.

I tried to stop em from tappin but i didnt know which one it was that was tappin so i adjusted em all and i think i got em too tight cuz it runs horrible now and i cant get the rpms that i used to. I need to just re-adjust all the bolts on top of the rockers. I know how to do it but i guess i just dont have the feel for it.

Get NEW rocker arm nuts. Purchase valve adjustment clips that connect to the rocker arms (that will reduce the amount of oil that sprays around- they are cheap). Remove one valve cover, have helper start engine. Loosen up first nut while holding pushrod. When the you feel the pushrod start to "tap", tighten it up till it just stops (you can usually hear it just as well as feel it) and then tighten another half turn. Do the rest on that bank and then put on that valvecover and move over to the other side.
Note.
Use the clips or simply just clean up all the oil that spills. You can also cut the top off an old valve cover and that will retain most of the mess.
NEW rocker arm nuts. Once they lose their grip, you will be forever adjusting them.
Have a helper. This only takes about 30 seconds per side. To minimize the mess, you can have them shut the engine off between adjustments.
Of course, you can do the static adjustment as well. This way clearly adjusts them correctly with the correct preload.
