I've been looking into it and wanna discuss the SYE's available. I was wondering how hard it would be to actually get the gears and everything off the old and onto the new shaft. i have also looked at the hack and tap but would rather go for the actual SYE if it's not hard to do.

also does this just use the factory front drive shaft from an xj or should a custom one be made?

Its easy to do. and you need a new rear driveshaft. You can shorten a front cherokee shaft and it will work fine.

On a side note, I have a JB conversions Supershort, and I love it. It is a bit more expensive but it is the shortest SYE out there. Which gives you more driveshaft length.

I got a quote from Young's Gear for a shortened driveshaft at $150, so factured that into the total price.

No, the price quote was for me bringing in an Explorer CV shaft and having it shortened, adapted for a SYE and Dana 44, and balanced.

He has the 44, however, thats not a complete price. Remembering what they were going to charge Nate, you cant even get a shaft shortened for that price.

Yep, it's a 44, that was one thing I knew to look for on TJs when I bought mine.

Doing a SYE is simple, just make sure you have the right tools :D I didn't when I did mine and messed up a retainer. Go with a Super Short for better drive line angles, I know Ron has a Hackn' Tap and hasn't had any problems but I don't trust them. The directions makes it look like alot but if you take your time they are simple. I did mine still under the TJ, also make sure your careful when you remover your speed-o-sensor so you don't damage the O-ring. I didn't notice mine was cracked when I put it back in and had a leak that I couldn't find for the longest time.

Go with the hack and tap, cheaper and works just as good as any other. I'll check on that one for ya.

Youngs shortened my rear driveshaft, put a new spicer u-joint and replaced the u-joints in the cv for $98. Who are you talking to there? maybe have one of the folks that shop there regulary get a quote. Just a thought.

x2 on the Hack n Tap. Its just as strong as the rest, just ask Stu Olson, hes been running one for years and never had a problem. Not saying you cant break it if you get stupid though...
