what's the best way to go about this? i've read that people will just take a xj front shaft and have it modified to fit

correct. That is the cheapest way to go about it. and it's not a bad way either. other than that you'd have to get a custom one made by someone or buy one from someone like tom woods but they are expensive and I really don't like his work. Ask Nate about the Tatton one he bought. Youngs can modify one and I know you've heard bad things about them but they have always done me right so I still use them. There is also another guy in town that can modify them but I don't have his info right now.

RE sells the hack-n-tap as well as the driveshafts to fit it.

Just to give you an idea of what Young's would charge (I know you don't need it all but it's a figure)

$1000 for:

Advance Adapters SYE
Custom Built Drive Shaft
Labor

Youngs charged me less than $100 to shorten my DS and replace the cv on it.

Waiting on a call within the next couple days from someone else who does this work. As soon as I here from him I'll let you know.

I know right. That is for the parts and the labor....

This is what I've found.

Teraflex Short SYE - $235
Tom Woods Shaft - $299

That is like $300 for just install from Young's.

Actually, it all depends on who you talk to.

I've heard good, and I've heard bad. Never hurts to check for yourself up to date each time.

placing a call back to tattons tomorrow for vendorship status. He does good work on custom built driveshafts. Check out Ron's hack n tap. I have had SYE's. They are nice and all, but pricey and time consuming to intall. Helped Lawson do his 5 or so years ago. Took a good bit of time.

So the RE hack-n-tap the better way to go then?

Coming from a former businessman, that is complete horseeditediteditedit! Either you turn out a good product or you dont, either you give a good price or you dont. If its a friend thing then yeah, I get it, if not, its editediteditedit

there is a tera-low 4 to 1 available but before you do that, ask yourself if you really need it. Just my advice. Ignore at your leisure

BTW, before anyone thinks about paying 1000 to 1200 for an SYE and driveshaft installed from in town, look at buying a brand new NP 231 with SYE installed from Q tec for 699. Then buy the DS and still be in the same price or cheaper with brand new hardware

I am not a Teraflex fan....

Tom Woods stuff has been really good. When I lived in Utah I had a noise in mine, and Tom crawled under to check out the pinion angles and stuff. My rear shaft has held up from Moab to Fairbanks creek with a lot of high speed road driving. I have an AA SLE with a Woody rear shaft.

A set of SLE and shaft should be around $500 to buy just about anywhere...Tom Woods, JE Reel....

The problem is, chances are there are several techs working on shafts. There probably is no set price (problem with the business, not the tech) and the tech gets to determine how many hours to charge the customer and how much material they need. That can drastically change the price of repair.

Coming from someone who worked as an Automotive Service Tech for 6 months, I can say it all depends on who did the estimate and how much BS they can add to the price. I got yelled at several times for not charging enough for work. I didn't feel it was honest to charge soo much more when it really didn't take me any longer. However, if you took it by the book with all the options listed (I had missed a few of those options) it added quite a bit of time.

I cannot fault the tech, but yes they should have a more set price for doing work.

Kindof like if you need parts, see Dennis, otherwise you might have to go back there three times trying to get the right part. Don't ask me why, but that's what normally happens.

Yes, I don't make a habit of using Youngs, except to check prices, and it cannot hurt to call, each time. You never know, you could get the good price.

Lets try not to bash on youngs too much here. I understand a few or more folks have had bad experiences. I have had nothing but good experiences with them. And no I don't talk to Dennis every time. i talk to who ever is available. i use them for all my drivetrain parts. They beat Napa by $100 on a bearing for my dodge. They were the only place that could get me the correct seal I needed at one time and was cheaper than anybody else who kept selling me the wrong one.

Now back to your irregulary scheduled thread about matt getting rid of his slip yoke...

I'll say this much. The pricing disparagement is enough to be frustrated over but the customer service is what took the cake for me. I am testing the waters with them again. I went to them for my last 2 parts runs for diff rebuilds and am now back on fair terms with them. 6 months ago I held them in the same regard as Gene's Chrysler:eek:
I like to support the local guy as long as he isn't trying to take me to the bank. When I got here in 2003, there wasn't a great deal of competition so local stores used to charge an arm and a leg for stuff. Now the prices are more in line.

I dont think anyone was bashing on them per say. I just dont agree with a business practice that you get different pricing depending on which day of the week or who you talk to. Just seems strange to me.

You can get a Super Short SYE for around $250 + shipping, they are easy to install, the instructions make them out to be much harder then they are. Better drive line angles over the hack-n-tap. Just my .02

I agree ron their business practices aren't the best. And to clarify I didn't really think anyone as bashing them but seemed like it might have been headed that way.
