Ok so until i can get all my parts for the axle swap nate hooked me up with a set of one piece D30 shafts from a ZJ. So after running all over town finding the right seals and such I started this last night. had to stop due to a broken bolt but got that fixed this morning. Went to put the shafts in and it was a no go. The shafts would go all the way in. They are actually longer, both sides not just the long side. I thought maybe the spline section was different but no they are the same. it's the overall length. The shafts are ABS shafts, wonder if this makes a difference? Now I have the XJ disabled in Gina's parking spot unable to move. I could put the other shafts back in to move ibut would have to take out the brand new seals I just put in so the old ones would fit and really don't want to do that. Anybody got any ideas? Anybody got a set of non abs shafts they could measure to compare? I haven't measured these yet but will. I have nopics as I can't upload any pics.

Man this sucks.

And just so we can get it out of the way early and try to stay on topic: Nates shaft is too big for Mel. There you go laugh, giggle, snicker, whatever and get back on topic. :D

Well thanks for the help guys, you all sure are full of info. lol

Well after some thinking and research and talking to some folks we came to the conclusion that the bearings are different on certain D30's. One thing though is that the ZJ shafts were flat out too long. The abs ring sat past the outer edge of the knuckle. So it leads us to believe they are completely different lengths. Around 1.5" longer than the XJ ones.

I did get a whole TJ axle and just pulled the shafts with bearings and all and they fir just fine so that part is done. I even used the calipers off it as I've had issues with mine in the past. Now the front brakes are locked up. Have to try to figure that out now.

Uh-oh. My trail-spare ZJ shafts came from a TJ. Tom's TJ.
And my spare rear shafts came from a TJ. My TJ.
I better break out the tape measure

The rear spares I carried and used when I broke the ZJ shaft, were Nate's TJ shafts, so I believe that the rear ones are the same.

I think the fronts didn't work because of the neck on the shaft. I don't think the shaft went all the way into the carrier like your originals did.

Just some random thoughts from past experiences with folks who've had similar front axle issues.

The D35 shafts are the same. I had on TJ shaft in mine and one ZJ shaft and both worked fine. The D30 shaft went all the way to the cross pin but were still too long. I'm going to try to put them in the TJ housing tonight and see what happens there.

The d30 outers are the same length, right? It's just the inners that are different?
