Anyone out there familiar with the D44 carriers found in FSJ's? I'd like to find out if my parts rigs have gears I can use. For my J20/M715 project I got a used set of 4:88 gears for the front D44HD. I still need rear gears for it. It's currently running 3:73 in a front D44HD and rear D60. I think I need a 3:92 or higher carrier to run that 4:88 in front. What about the rear D60?

I have a 73 J4000 parts rig with D44 closed knuckle front and rear D44 with 4:11 gears and I'm trying to find out if it's gears and carriers would swap into my 89 Waggy or could be used in the front of the J20/M715 project with teh 4:88 gears. The 89 has D44's front and rear with 3.27 and a rear limited slip currently. Are the side gears different in these D44 fronts? I also have a 70 waggy with a rear 44 and front 27A or possably D30 to through into the mix. Not sure what gears it has in it but I'd guess 4:11.

Ultimatly I'm looking for 4:88 in the J20/M715 and lower gearing for the waggy. Waggy will remain open as it's going to be a daily driver and the J20/M715 will get a rear locker. Not sure on the front yet...

man, I am not ignoring you, I am just having trouble gathering the "question" part of this. The only question I can gather out of the above post is that you want to know what the carrier break is for a Dana 60.
Are the side gears different in the 44 fronts? Well, I know the 73 J truck has 19 spline Dana 44 shafts while the 89 GC Dana 44 has 30 spline shafts, so in that regard, yes there is a difference. However, you may be able to pull the spiders out of your carrier and put them into the other carrier.

Is that the questions you are asking?

Thats what I was looking for Nate... Just trying to figure out what I can do with what I have on hand.

I wonder if the rear 44 in a 70 Wagoneer could be used in a front 44HD? I'm hopping the Wagoneer is 4:11 so I could use the 4:88 ring and pinion I have on it in the 44HD in the J20/M715.
